What Is Biomechanical Work Restoration?
Biomechanical work restoration can be thought of as an outpatient chronic pain intervention. It is designed for use in medically stable, non-surgical candidates who demonstrates a physiological impairment, or dysfunction, that prevents their return to work, attaining full-duty or pre-injury status or reaching maximum medical improvement. 

BioFunction®’s Biomechanical Work Restoration Program provides for the rapid but careful resumption of function by active mobilization & normalization of injured body areas. It uses job specific work movements, posturing & activities that are controlled through computerized work simulation. It further employs the use of a scientifically engineered system of progressive incremental muscle loading that results in “safe and sustainable” physical restoration either to full duty work capability or to maximum medical improvement.

What Is The Purpose of Biomechanical Work Restoration?

“The desired end-point in [chronic] pain management is return to function rather than complete or immediate cessation of pain” (ACOEM1; pg. 116).

When Should Biomechanical Work Restoration Be Considered?
“When there is a delay in return to work or a prolonged period of inactivity, a program of functional restoration can be considered” (ACOEM2; pg. 92)

Does Biomechanical Work Restoration Work?
“Specific multidisciplinary approaches, such as biomechanical work restoration, report return-to-work rates of more than 80% following treatment, with a high percentage of these persons still working after one year.” (ACOEM1; pg. 114)

Candidate Qualification Process
All claimants referred to our program will be thoroughly screened to determine if they would be successful candidates for biomechanical work restoration.  Upon referral a Work Capacity Evaluation will be conducted consisting of 4 separate tests including:
1)      Whole body work simulation matched to patient's job description to test for functional deficits.

2)      Discomfort factoring analysis to assess the claimant’s perceptions of pain in relation to varying work
         activities, movements and loads.
3)      Behavioral factoring to measure if the claimant’s subjective complaints are based on pathology or are being influenced by behavioral issues.
4)      Intra-data validation & cross-referencing analysis using cognitive distraction testing to measure the
         claimant’s consistency of effort and objective physical performance capability.
Upon completion of the examination a comprehensive detailed report is written outlining specific recommendations for restoration if qualified, return to work and/or further medical workup as indicated.

BioFunction®’s Work Hardening  Modules provide targeted injury specific normalization, as well as overall “gross” muscle strength improvement, including specific protocols modules for the following:

  • Leg, Ankle & Foot
  • Lower Torso
  • Neck & Shoulder
  • Upper Torso
  • Wrist, Hand & Forearm
