Employers Direct Leads Rate Hikes with 33.9% Filing: WEST [06/04/09]

Employers Direct Insurance Co. filed for a whopping 33.9% rate increase earlier this month, easily leading the pack of insurers filing for mid-year increases, according to the Department of Insurance website.

California's reforms produced medical savings of $12.8 billion to $25.3 billion over a four-year period, but medical costs are climbing rapidly again, the California Workers' Compensation Institute said in a report released Wednesday.

State Fund Files for 15% Rate Hike

State Compensation Insurance Fund announced this morning that it has filed for a 15% rate increase, to take effect July 1.

"The principal driver of the premium increase is medical inflation," said Chief Executive Officer Jan Frank in a press release.

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or useyour shoulder or crook of the elbow. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it and don't forget to wash your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Avoid close contact with others and their secretions.  This means the usual handshakes, hugs and kisses.  Sharing drinking glasses, food and utensils should be avoided.

On the heels of an outbreak of swine flu that can be spread from human to human Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered a state response designed to head off a potential pandemic. As many as 60 people have died in Mexico, many of them healthy young adults, prompting the Mexican government to close schools, museums and other public places. Six people have fallen ill with the disease in California (including two children) and another two people in Texas, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

None of the California cases involve deaths. In each case, the virus has run its course and the patients have recovered, according to California

Department of Public Health (CDPH) spokesman Ronald Owens.

From Bizjournals.com 3/18/09- Workers’ Comp Rates may be headed for a steep increase again: “The Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau, an industry-supported advisory group, decided Wednesday to recommend a 24.4 percent July rate increase, roughly the same as earlier indications had suggested. The March 18 move came a day after news reports that the WCIRB’s governing committee was poised to recommend a mid-year rate increase “in the mid-20s” -- reports that led Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to ask the Department of Insurance, and Commissioner Steve Poizner, to reject the recommendation before it was officially tendered.

San FranciscoDec. 30, 2008—Two Bay Area construction companies who were recently cited by California Labor Commissioner Angela Bradstreet and referred to the San Francisco County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution were today charged with failing to obey a stop order and failing to secure workers’ compensation insurance.
